My Singles of 2009

photo.php.jpg

I didn’t originally intend on actually making one of these lists, the albums one was enough irritating hassle. Oh well, look what happens on a relatively boring Sunday afternoon. Emily Haines and Metric have clearly melted my ears for the past year or so, you only need to look at my Last.Fm profile to see how many ridiculous plays they’ve had. Gimme Sympathy may not be to everyones taste, but in reality it’s just a perfect little pop song; I cannot help but adore it. The opening synth of 1901, sadly, completely destroys everything Metric have released in 2009. Phoenix have had a fucking outstanding year, just listen to the record and you’ll completely understand why. P.S - Don’t laugh too much at the addition of She Wolf, that song is a classic in the making. Auuu.

I have always been quite the geek with lists and graphs, sadly I didn’t want to throw myself into the latter. 2009 has clearly been a brilliant year for music. Metric decided to get to work and actually release Fantasies, a record that had been in the making for too many fucking years. I loved it, all was forgiven and Emily Haines has been a fixture in my bed for the past six months. It wasn’t perhaps the most musically complex or endearing album of the year, but I cannot say any other band has come close to the amount of plays Fantasies has had.

Scandalism.

It is a disgustingly mundane morning. The weather has been nothing but depressing. First time using Tumblr and I have already made an apparently tedious mistake regarding crediting. Balls. Typical Ryan. I can only hope the day gets better at some point, although I am going to the Scandalism launch party/event tonight in London. Telepathe, Wolf Gang, Marina and the Diamonds are all playing. Should be pretty sweet, especially since my friend knows the singer from Yes Giantess. Although I would prefer bumping into Marina and whisper naughty things into her ear.

Sharkerotica.

Why is it that most people seem to find something they are incredibly passionate about, whether that be politics or the economy? I am still waiting to wake up and have some calling, have something click that I can get all excited and feel passion for. I just find myself having an odd obsession with Sharks. Although, perhaps that could be it. I am going to South Africa on a Great White Shark conservation, part of the “shark team” (fuck yes) and assist in documenting activity. It is apparently supposed to give a unique opportunity to view them in their natural environment. That’s right. I am going to be in the sea, paddling about and feeding them pigeons. I am going to be lectured on biology, research and conservation, behaviour, changing attitudes and basically life as a little Shark. I am just a little bit too excited - I just hope I see a dolphin get ravished.

I Saw You / At The Discotheque.

When I saw you at the discotheque… sent my vibe out to you. I finally managed to get my hands on the new Discovery record. I say finally, it was released last week. I doubt I have to give much of an introduction. Rostam Batmanglij. Wes Miles. Collaboration. Side-Project. I was perhaps somewhat dubious on first listen but I truly cannot remember the last time I heard such a genuinely fun record. Bright Like Neon Love? Perhaps. It’s not serious, a little pretentious - an homage to contemporary R&B/electro. Perhaps an encapsulation of everything I like, then.

Ryan, Half Robot.

You would expect me to find something better to do at five in the morning. Although, you shouldn’t expect much (if anything) from me. I have a serious commitment to disappointment. Mundane introduction - I am Ryan. I like Sharks. Music. Art and Models. I am pretentious and have the body of a rake. You can judge me, I would only do the same. Having spent the last few months becoming addicted to Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm - It only makes logical sense to finally move onto a blog. Of course my exceedingly interesting life has to be shared with the world. I have always wanted to keep away from the world of blogging - partially because if you aren’t getting exclusive music then your blog is perhaps a little bit shit. Sadly, you know it’s the truth. What exactly do I have to offer? Perhaps non-sensical, highly annoying and poorly written updates on my life, even the occasional endearing moment on the art of caressing nipples. Something. Although to be perfectly honest, this blog is designed to promote myself until Alyona Osmanova notices me - the internet version of Borat if you will.
